Manfred Mäder (born August 23, 1948 in Prenzlau ; † November 21, 1986 in Berlin ) was a victim of the Berlin Wall . While trying to flee the GDR with René Gross, he was shot by members of the GDR border troops .

Life

Manfred Mäder grew up in the GDR and lived in the eastern part of Berlin. When he was 38 years old, he decided to try to escape with René Gross . On November 21, 1986, they drove together in an IFA W50 truck to the border between Treptow and Neukölln . At the Karpfenteichstrasse they broke through the hinterland wall and the signal fence. Members of the GDR border troops opened fire on the truck, which remained standing on the base of border wall 75 parallel to the course of the wall. Manfred Mäder climbed onto the structure, which was about the same height as the wall, and jumped west. Lying on the top of the wall, he was hit in the back of the thigh by a targeted shot by a border guard. The projectile penetrated its main artery. He fell from the wall and bled to death on the spot. His companion was shot in the head and died immediately.

The incident was observed by residents of West Berlin who were startled by the impact of the truck against the wall. Police and customs from West Berlin came to the crime scene, but could not see it due to the local conditions. In order to prevent further attention, the border guards removed all traces without investigating the location.

Manfred Mäder was one of the 13 people who died while fleeing the GDR and for whose death Erich Honecker was indicted in the Berlin Regional Court in 1992 . The shooter was sentenced in 2004 in a wall shooting trial to a prison term of 10 months on probation.
