Plänterwald is a district in the Treptow-Köpenick district of Berlin .

The district was created in 1997 as a separation from the districts of Alt-Treptow and Baumschulenweg . The settlement area Plänterwald already existed before that, named after the Plänterwald forest, which was created as a plenter forest . Today's settlement Plänterwald is located southwest of the Plänterwald and has an S-Bahn station of the same name on the Görlitzer Bahn .

The 89  hectare Plänterwald forest extends between the districts of Alt-Treptow in the north-west and Baumschulenweg in the south. Created in 1760 on the banks of the Spree , it was initially used for forestry purposes and since 1876 has been supplemented on the northwest side by Treptower Park as an urban recreational area.

Former Spreepark amusement park

In 1969, in the north of the Plänterwald, the Kulturpark Berlin was created as a permanent amusement park. Before the political change in 1989 it had around 1.5 million visitors a year. The facility, reopened in 1992 as Spreepark , was closed in 2001 under presumably fraudulent circumstances (see: Norbert Witte ); an investor for the renovation and reopening has not yet been found.

Abandoned egg house

Immediately south of the Spreepark area is the old egg house as a historic excursion restaurant from the 19th century . The monument already described by Theodor Fontane in his novel Der Stechlin has been empty since autumn 1990 and threatens to continue to deteriorate.

Running events also take place here regularly. The most traditional since 1976 has been the Plänterwaldlauf, which until 2007 was held twice a year in February and December over distances between five and 20 kilometers from the SG Einheit Berliner Bär e. V. is aligned. With the autumn event 2007 (62nd Plänterwaldlauf) Folker Lorenz handed over the organization of his run to the ABC Zentrum Berlin e. V., who has continued these traditional runs ever since.
