Manfred Unger (born May 10, 1969 in Leoben ) is a former Austrian soccer player and now coach .

Career

As a player

Unger started his career at DSV Leoben . In September 1990 he made his debut for Leoben in the 1st division when he was in the starting line-up on the tenth day of the 1990/91 season against SK Vorwärts Steyr . In his first season in the top division, he was used in seven games. He scored his first goal for Leoben in May 1991 in a 2-0 win in the middle playoff against the Wiener Sport-Club . At the end of the 1991/92 season he had to relegate with the club as sixth in the middle playoffs in the 2nd division . There he completed 62 games for Leoben in the following three seasons.

For the 1995/96 season he moved to the Bundesliga club LASK . In November 1995 he scored his first goal in the top division in a 1-0 win against FC Admira / Wacker . He played a total of 47 Bundesliga games for Linz and scored two goals.

After two years in Upper Austria, he returned to the second division club DSV Leoben in August 1997. In the following five seasons he was used in 138 second division games for Leoben and scored five goals. For the 2002/03 season he moved to the fourth-class FC Trofaiach . After a season at Trofaiach, Unger moved to the lower class ESV St. Michael for the 2003/04 season . He then played for FC Weißkirchen , the amateurs of LASK, for which he had already been active between 1995 and 1997, and again for St. Michael. In 2012 he played for St. Michael again for a short time, and in 2014 he also made a one-time appearance as a coach at the fourth-class ATV Irdning .

As a trainer

Unger acted from September 2006 as assistant coach to Werner Gregoritsch at the second division club Kapfenberger SV . From January 2007 he also trained the Styrian amateurs. He held this position until the end of the 2009/10 season. With the professionals, he rose to the Bundesliga in 2008 . In November 2011, after Gregoritsch's resignation, he took over the Kapfenberg professionals on an interim basis with Milan Žurman . In his only game as head coach, Kapfenberg lost 6-0 against FC Red Bull Salzburg . After Thomas von Heesen had become Kapfenberg's coach, Unger left the club.

In May 2012 he became coach of the regional league team DSV Leoben , for which he had already played as a player. In August 2012, Leoben separated from Unger, the club was at that time on the 15th and thus penultimate place in the table. In September 2013 he took over the fourth class ATV Irdning . With Irdning he was relegated from the state league at the end of the 2013/14 season . After a season in the fifth-class league , he left the club after the 2014/15 season.

In 2016 he coached the second team of DSV Leoben. In December 2016 he took over the fourth-class SC Liezen . In April 2018 Liezen separated from Unger, the club was in eleventh place in the table at the time of the separation.

In January 2019 he became the coach of the sixth class FC Zeltweg . In October 2019, he resigned from the lower division.
