Manfred Willing (born November 21, 1937 ; † January 10, 2017 ) was a German football player. For BSG Chemie Zeitz he played in 1959 in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football . Willing was a GDR junior national player.

Athletic career

For the 1956 season (calendar year season), 18-year-old Manfred Willing moved from the company sports community (BSG) Motor in Halle-Ammendorf to BSG Motor Nordhausen West in the second-class first GDR league . Of the 26 league games played, Willing played twelve games and scored five goals. At the end of the season Motor West was determined to be relegated to the 2nd GDR league . Willing spent two seasons there with Nordhausen, but moved in 1959 to the league promoted BSG Chemie Zeitz .

There he was first used in the junior team . At the same time he was appointed to the GDR junior national team , with which he played an international match in April 1959. In the encounter between GDR and Greece (1: 1) he was used as a right winger. In the men's team of Chemie Zeitz, he was called up as a striker in three league games during the second half of the 1959 season as a representative of the injured Rudolf Freitag . In the match on the 16th match day between SC Dynamo Berlin and Chemie Zeitz (4: 2) he scored his only top division goal with the Zeitz opening goal. For the 1960 season, Zeitzer BSG no longer planned with Willing, who then returned to Motor Nordhausen.

With BSG Motor he played again in the 2nd GDR League until 1962. In the 1961/62 season (return to the summer-spring rhythm) the north houses succeeded in promotion to the first GDR league, but they had to relegate immediately. During this season (1962/63) Willing completed all 26 league games and was his team's top scorer with eleven goals. Since the second GDR league had been set, Motor Nordhausen then had to compete in the third-class district league Erfurt . It was not until 1966 that they were promoted to the GDR league. Also in the GDR league season 1966/67 Willing was part of the player base. There have now been played 30 point games, of which Willing only missed one game, but scored four goals. Again it was only enough for a year of second division, and Willing again had to spend two seasons in the district league. After rising again in 1969, BSG Motor was able to hold its own in the GDR league for a longer period of time. Until 1971, another 30 point games were played in the GDR league. Of the 60 games of these two seasons, Willing played 49 games, but with a total of five goals, his goal yield was only low. After he had completed 15 matches of the 22 games of the 1971/72 season and scored three goals, he took over the training of his team at the beginning of the 1972/73 season.

As a player-coach, Willing played in all 22 league games in 1973/74 and was also successful with three goals. When the 1974/75 season began, Willing was already 36 years old. He now concentrated solely on training the motor team and only appeared once in a point game as a player. He then ended his time at Motor Nordhausen. In total, he had played three league games (one goal) and 170 games in the GDR league (32 goals) for Zeitz and Nordhausen. Later he coached the district league team of Glückauf Sondershausen . He rose with her in 1980 in the GDR league and was able to keep them up until 1984. After the 1983/84 season he retired as a coach, but returned again in April 1987 when BSG Glückauf was in dire straits. But he could not avert relegation and was no longer active in higher-class football.
