Manfred Wolter (born February 18, 1938 in Potsdam , † October 14, 1999 in Woltersdorf ) was a German writer, non-fiction author, editor, screenwriter, film scenarist and director.

biography

Before the fall of the Wall, Manfred Wolter, who studied classical philology and German studies and initially was a teacher, mainly published his own fiction writings and anthologies (with Bernd Jentzsch , Rainer Kirsch , Joochen Laabs and Joachim Walther, among others ). His book Polterabend in Kuhfelde went through three, Frank even four editions. Wolter worked for DEFA for many years as a screenwriter and scenarioist. His best-known films were Zünd an, die Feuerwehr (1978), Asta, mein Engelchen (1980) and Don Juan, Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 78 (1980). In 1989 Karl Heinz Lotz shot the film I can also go backwards , the script written by Wolter based on the story of his own daughter.

After the fall of the Wall, Wolter wrote scripts for documentaries and also directed some of them (about 1994 for " Aktion Ungeziefer ", where he also wrote a non-fiction book of the same name) or From Normandy to the Bundestag (1995, documentary about Stefan Heym ). In 1995 he was the town clerk of Beeskow for half a year , and in 1996 he received a scholarship at Wiepersdorf Castle . In autumn 1997 he became head of the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Haus in Erkner .

In 1988, Wolter received an award from the GDR's Albert Schweitzer Committee for his book Frank . His screenplay for I can also go backwards won third prize in an international ORF screenwriting competition in 1988 and first prize at the “ Goldener Spatz ” children's film festival in 1991 . Wolter had been a PEN member since 1993 . His estate (scripts, scenarios, idea sketches, treatments, working manuscripts, awards) is administered by the Film Museum in Potsdam .
