The drama I can also go backwards is a GDR children's film by the director Karl-Heinz Lotz from 1990 . The film is about the integration of people with disabilities.

action

Six-year-old Kati has a slight physical and mental disability. However, a medical report certifies their performance as appropriate for attending a regular school.

Kati is looking forward to visiting a "normal" school. She is slower than the other children, but she practices diligently to keep up with the class. It is also not easy for her because some classmates tease her about her disability . Nevertheless, she also makes a lot of friends. But not only some classmates are critical of her, but also the teachers. And instead of supporting her, they only criticize Kati's slowness.

That is why Kati's parents are also looking for special schools for children with disabilities. Since the school is further away, Kati would have to go to boarding school. Through the school they also get in contact with a former student of the special school . After school, he couldn't find a job and lives in an old people's home. He needs some help in everyday life and can only find it in the old people's home . Kati befriends the young man. But it also learns from the reactions of the environment how people with disabilities are deported.

Although her school performance is mediocre, the teachers want to get rid of Kati. And after a talk with the school director, the parents finally give up. And so Kati has to go to special school in the next school year.

particularities

The film is based on real events from the life of the screenwriter Manfred Wolter's daughter Ulrike . Only the tragic ending of the film is fictitious. Ulrike and Manfred Wolter appear in a short scene in the film. Kati's parents visit a family where the integration of a child with a disability into a mainstream school worked. The daughter (Ulrike Wolter) speaks directly into the camera and thanks her teachers for their help at school.
