The Sorrows of Young Werther is a DEFA film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe .

Lotte is engaged to Albert when young Werther falls in love with her at a ball. Werther advertises Lotte, but is rejected. He works in a law firm, but he can't forget Lotte. Lotte marries Albert, but Werther does not give up on winning Lotte's heart. Lotte himself vacillates between Albert and Werther, but cannot decide to separate from Albert due to social conventions. Lotte finally rejects Werther and he takes his own life.
