Manfred Zaspel (born August 11, 1948 ) is a former German soccer player. In the 1970s and 1980s he played for 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig and BSG Chemie Böhlen in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football.

Athletic career

Until 1971 Manfred Zaspel played in the company sports club (BSG) Motor Döbeln , most recently in the third-class district league in Leipzig . For the 1971/72 season he moved to the league club 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, where he played his first league games as a substitute on the 8th and 13th match day. Mainly he was used in the 2nd team, which played in the district league, but reached promotion to the GDR league at the end of the season. Even in the following two seasons, Zaspel did not get beyond the status of a substitute in the league and played only three or two matches as such. Even in the GDR league, his appearances in the 2nd team were limited: 1972/73 six point games (1 goal), 1973/74 eight games (5 goals). In the 1974/75 season Zaspel was not used in the major league, he only played once in the GDR league. 1975/76 he was also not called up in the league, the 2nd team played after their relegation again in the district league.

In view of the lack of prospects, Zaspel was given up to the GDR league club Chemie Böhlen in the summer of 1976. There he succeeded immediately the breakthrough, because of the 20 played league games he played 19 games and reached with the team participation in the league promotion round. There Zaspel was used in seven of the eight games in which Böhlen made the promotion. In his fourth league season he managed to gain a foothold in the top league with the chemistry team. Used in attack, he played in all 26 league games and also scored his first five league goals. He was also set as a striker in 1978/79, played 21 league games and scored three goals. Then Chemie Böhlen had to get down again and fell into the hands of the elevator team, commuting between the GDR league and the upper league until 1984. After Zaspel was able to keep up with 16 GDR league games and eight promotion games in 1979/80, he was only a substitute in the 1980/81 league season in twelve missions. At the end of the season it was announced that he had ended his career, but he was reactivated for the promotion games in 1981/82 and helped Bohlen with seven missions and one goal for renewed promotion to the league. Although he was no longer nominated for 1982/83, he was still used for five minutes in the final phase of the third league match day. After he had also completed a GDR league game in 1983/84, he finally said goodbye to higher-class football at the age of 36. There he had played 67 league games and scored eight goals and completed 73 games in the GDR league, including promotion rounds, in which he had scored 18 goals.
