The man of Bleivik ( Norwegian : Stone Alder Mannen fra Bleivik ) or bog body of Bleivik is a Mesolithic bog body , which in 1952 in a former marsh about six kilometers north of the city of Haugesund in Norway has been found.

Find

In March 1952 a farmer came across human bones while building a drainage ditch in his field at a depth of 70 centimeters . It hid a well-preserved skull , a femur and a humerus . During a re-excavation by employees of the University of Bergen in June, additional bones were found at the site, including a rib , two vertebrae and teeth, as well as fragments of another thigh bone.

Findings

The anthropological examination of the skull revealed that it was a man around 60 years old . Based on the long bones present, his height was estimated to be a maximum of 160 centimeters. Pronounced muscle attachment marks on the bones suggest a strong physique close of the man. The teeth were a left lower canine , a left lower premolar , and a right upper incisor . The anatomical and odontological examination of the teeth found in the 1990s confirmed that they can all be assigned to the man whose age was limited to 55 to 60 years based on the characteristic features of the tooth roots.

The cause of death could not be determined on the basis of the body parts present. The layer of earth at the site showed no faults or excavation traces, which suggests that the deceased was not buried, but came to lie there naturally and was only gradually covered by sediment. For these reasons, the scientists working with Torgersen assumed that the man might have drowned in the then still open water . By means of a pollen analysis carried out in the 1950s from the layer of earth in which the skeletal parts were embedded, the find was dated to around 5000 BC . The dating could later be confirmed by 14 C dating of a sample from the bones to the period around 7950 ± 110 years Before Present , between about 6110 and 5890 BC. BC, to be determined more precisely.
