The Mannsteine (Polish: Czeskie Kamienie , Czech. Mužské Kameny ) are a rock formation in the Giant Mountains and, together with the Mädelsteinen, form the double peak of the Hraniční hřeben (German border ridge ), approx. 6 km north of Spindleruv Mlyn (Czech. Špindlerův Mlýn , Polish Szpindlerowy Młyn ) and 7.5 km southeast of Szklarska Poręba ( Schreiberhau ) near the Czech-Polish border.
The over 50 meters long and 12 meters high rock group with the wool sack weathering typical of the Giant Mountains offers an impressive 360 ° panoramic view. All around, a field of rubble made up of smaller granite blocks illustrates the formation through erosion.
Surroundings
- 750 meters east is the two meters lower rock group of the Mädelsteine (1414 m above sea level).
- 500 meters to the west, in the saddle in front of the Great Balaclava (Polish: Śmielec , Czech: Smělec ), a memorial commemorates the tragic death of the Czech journalist Rudolf Kalman, who died here during a snow storm on January 14, 1929.
Flora, fauna and nature conservation
The manstones are in the area of the Czech National Park Krkonošský národní park (KRNAP) on the Kammweg ( Path of Polish-Czech Friendship ).
The exposed location and harsh climate have a major impact on the number of species that live here. Only mountain pines and various lichens can keep up at this altitude, but they are still home to herbivorous bugs, spiders and wood-dwelling beetles. These insects in turn are food for various bird species such as B. mountain pipit , black redstart and common swift . On the slopes below there is a mountain conifer forest , mainly with spruce, which has a greater biodiversity.
