Manoao colensoi is the only plant species of the monotypical genus Manoao inthe stone slab family (Podocarpaceae).

Vegetative characteristics
Manoao colensoi grows as an evergreen tree that reaches heights of about 15 meters and a trunk diameter of about 100 centimeters. The bark is brownish-gray. The foliage leaves in the youth phase are 6 to 12 millimeters long, older plant specimens have flaky leaves that are only 1 to 2.5 millimeters long.

Manoao colensoi is gyno-dioecious .
Occurrence
Manoao colensoi thrives at altitudes from sea level to 950 meters on the north and south islands of New Zealand .
Taxonomy
It was first described in 1843 under the name ( Basionym ) Dacrydium colensoi by William Jackson Hooker in Hooker's Icones Plantarum , Volume 6, Plate 548. This species belonged to the genus Dacrydium until the revision by CJQuinn in 1982 ; he called this species Lagarostrobos colensoi (Hook.) Quinn . BPJ Molloy presented in Manoao (Podocarpaceae) in 1995 , a new monotypic conifer genus endemic to New Zealand. in New Zealand Journal of Botany , Volume 33, pages 183 to 201 this species as Manoao colensoi in the new genus Manoao . The genus name Manoao is the name for this plant species in the Maori language . The specific epithet colensoi honors William Colenso (1811–1899). Other synonyms for Manoao colensoi (Hook f.) BPJMolloy are: Lepidothamnus colensoi (Hook.) De Laub. Kirk , Dacrydium westlandicum .
