Manthiri Kumari ( Tamil : மந்திரி குமாரி) is a 1950 Tamil film directed by TR Sundaram and Ellis R. Dungan .

action

The royal priest of an insane ruler wants to launch his son Parthiban as general of the royal army, but the king makes Veeramohan a general. Parthiban then earns his living as a bandit in a batman-like mask and tries to discredit Veeramohan's abilities as a general through his actions. He wants to win over Princess Jeevarekha, with whom Veeramohan is in love. A message from Parthiban with the request to meet him in secret accidentally reaches Amudavalli, the minister's daughter, instead of Jeevarekha. Parthiban and Amudavali meet and fall in love.

The king sends Veeramohan to seize the bandit Parthiban. Parthiban is captured and brought to justice. His father, the high priest, reaches a verdict before the temple goddess. Amudavalli hides behind the statue of the gods and declares Parthiban innocent and Veeramohan a criminal. Believing in the truth of God's judgment , the king offends Veeramohan and Parthiban and Amudavalli marry.

Incited by his father, Parthiban seeks rule over the kingdom. In order to marry the princess, he plans to murder Amudavalli. On a cliff, he reveals her intention to kill. Amudavalli succeeds in throwing Parthiban off the cliff to his death. She then converted to Buddhism and became a nun. The priest kills her during a ceremony and is imprisoned. Veeramohan is pardoned and gets his princess back.

background

Manthiri Kumari , a production by Modern Theaters , is one of the most popular films in Tamil cinema of the 1950s and, with protagonists M. Karunanidhi and MG Ramachandran, continued the DMK propaganda in the tradition of the film Velaikkari from the previous year. The recordings were made in the mountain village of Yercaud near Salem . Karunanidhi's script is based on Kundalakesi , a classic Tamil epic from the 8th century. The original text, of which only 28 verses have survived, tells the story of a Jain woman from the Vaishya caste who kills her husband in self-defense and converts to Buddhism . Against the historical background, the screenwriter replaced the Jain context with the Brahmins caste in line with the DMK ideology .

The film established the rogue image of actor MN Nambiar . It was the last work of the American Ellis R. Dungan in the Tamil film industry after 15 years .

Film music

Performers of G. Ramanathan's music, which is also successful outside of the film , included T. Loganathan , TM Soundararajan and ML Vasanthakumari . The lyrics were written by A. Marudakasi and KM Sharif .
