Manuel Thomas

Manuel Thomas (* 1940 in Speyer ) is a German writer and painter .

After graduating from the St. Blasien college, Thomas studied painting , art history , philosophy and theater studies in Mainz and Munich . In 1969 he received the sponsorship award from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate , in 1975 the sponsorship award from the city of Munich, and in 1977 he received a scholarship from the Deutsche Akademie Rome Villa Massimo . In 1987 he accepted a Paris scholarship from Rhineland-Palatinate, in 1993 he received the Tower Clerk's Prize of the City of Deidesheim, and in 2017 the Art Prize of the Ike and Berthold Roland Foundation, Mannheim. Thomas lives in Munich, is married to the journalist Franziska Müller-Härlin and has three sons.

Further poems with etchings or lithographs have been published as portfolios: India, The Palatinate, South America, Paths through Ireland and The Life of Jesus. His works also include libretti : Gesucht werden Tote, an opera by Werner Haentjes , premiered in Cologne in 1966 , and Inane, a monologue for soprano and orchestra by Aribert Reimann, premiered in Berlin in 1970. The setting of some of his poetry cycles by Werner Haentjes were premiered by the singer William Pearson. Since 1961 Thomas has shown his work in around 100 exhibitions at home and abroad. Numerous trips took him through almost all European countries, to the former USSR, to India, the Middle East, the Far East and South America, sometimes combined with readings and exhibitions for the Goethe Institute . His work groups include drawings, prints, paintings, watercolors, collages, reverse glass pictures, book illustrations and artist books, often documented in catalogs. A separate group of works are sheets of various techniques on Marcel Proust and his work In Search of Lost Time , with which Thomas has repeatedly been concerned from 1975 to the present day. He also designed parts of the interior furnishings of sacred buildings in Rhineland-Palatinate , such as the choir wall of the Catholic Church in Altrip (1980) and the five-part convertible altar in the Limburgerhof Catholic Church (1992). He and his wife have written four travel guides.
