Maphumulo ( English Maphumulo Local Municipality ) is a municipality in the iLembe district , KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa . In 2011 the population was 96,724 on a total area of 896 km². The seat of the municipal administration is Maphumulo , the only town in the municipality. Bhekumuzi P. Ngcobo is the mayor of the municipality. The ANC has the majority in the local council.
The community name comes from the Zulu language and stands for "resting place". There are three different options for the origin of the name:
- King Shaka and his warriors stopped here while hunting.
- The first settler at this point was called Maphumulo.
- The missionaries who set up a mission station here called this Umphumulo Mission .
All these explanations played a role in the search for a name for the municipality and resulted in the current name.

In 2011 the community had 96,724 inhabitants. 99.7% of them were black.
The first language was 95.1% isiZulu , 1.4% isiNdebele and 1.2% English.
