Marc'Antonio Zondadari (also Marcantonio , born November 26, 1658 in Siena , † June 16, 1722 in Valletta ) was the 65th Grand Master of the Order of Malta .

Life

Marc'Antonio Zondadari's mother, Agnese Chigi , was a niece of Pope Alexander VIII. His father was the Marchese Ansano Zondadari, his brothers were the Cardinal Antonio Felice Zondadari and the Archbishop of Siena , Alessandro Zondadari .

He was educated at a noble college in Parma, from there he went to Naples. After serving in the Navy of the Order of Malta from 1682 , including as commanding a galley and general of the galleys of the Order of Malta, in 1701 he became chief chamberlain and close confidante of Grand Master Ramon Perellos y Roccaful . In this way he was able to bring the order's fleet into a condition that was not great, but at least respectable, and submitted a proposal to the Grand Master to regulate the order's finances. In 1712 he became ambassador to Pope Clement XI. who showed him special appreciation.

After the death of the Grand Master Ramon Perellos y Roccaful on January 13 or 14, 1720, Marc'Antonio Zondadari was elected as his successor. Although his reign only lasted until his death in 1722, his orders made him popular with the residents of Malta . He strengthened the long-neglected discipline of the order, had the fortifications of the island repaired and ordered the daily distribution of alms . He also obtained a certificate from the Pope , which stipulated that every knight who had more than 300 pounds in income had to assign a man to secure the island.

His body was in a tomb of Massimiliano Soldani Benzi (1658-1740) in St. John's Cathedral St. buried in Valletta, while his heart to his native city of Siena has been spent . The tomb is a baroque work of art in marble and bronze and shows the grand master lying down. This is the only tomb in the nave as it did not fit in the chapel of the Italian tongue of the order.
