Antonio Felice Zondadari , also Antonfelice Zondadari (born December 13, 1665 in Siena , † November 23, 1737 ibid), was an Italian clergyman, papal diplomat and cardinal .

Life

Family relationships and early years

Born as the son of Ansano Zondadari and his wife Agnese Chigi , he was on his mother's side a great-nephew of Pope Alexander VII and nephew of Cardinal Flavio Chigi seniore , therefore he also had the surname Chigi Zondadari . One of his brothers, Alessandro Zondadari , was Archbishop of Siena ; Another brother, Marc'Antonio Zondadari , was commanding a galley of the Order of Malta in 1682 and its grandmaster from 1720 to 1722 .

Antonio Felice Zondadari studied at the University of Siena, where he obtained the degree of Doctor iuris utriusque . On March 25, 1690 he received the sacrament of ordination and in 1693 worked as a trainee lawyer at the courts of the Apostolic Signature . From February 20, 1694 to February 21, 1697 he was vice- legate in Bologna , from November 16, 1697 to 1699 governor of Ancona . In 1698 he was a trainee lawyer at the Apostolic Signature .

Church career

On December 5, 1701 he was named titular archbishop of Damascus . The episcopal ordination donated him on 18 December 1701 Rome Cardinal Fabrizio Paolucci . From January 27, 1702, he was nuncio in Spain for matters resulting from the War of the Spanish Succession and became resident nuncio in Spain on May 28, 1706. After a controversy between the Spanish king and the Pope, Zondadari was sent to Avignon, where he spent the next three years.

Pope Clement XI. elevated him to cardinal priest in the consistory of May 18, 1712 ; Antonio Zondadari received the cardinal's hat and the title of Santa Balbina on September 23, 1715. From January 10, 1718 to February 8, 1719 he was chamberlain of the Holy College of Cardinals . He took part in the conclave of 1721, in which Pope Innocent XIII. was chosen. Probably in the absence of Cardinal Carlo Maria Marini during his tenure as legate in Romagna, he was Pro- Prefect of the Congregation of Rites . He was a participant in the conclave of 1730, from which Clemens XII. emerged as Pope and in the course of which Cardinal Cornelio Bentivoglio proposed the exclusive King Philip V of Spain against Zondadari's election as Pope. From July 27, 1730 he was Prefect of the Apostolic Signature; on April 9, 1731 he moved to the titular church of Santa Prassede .

Antonio Felice Zondadari died in Siena on November 23, 1737. At his own request, he was buried in the local church of San Giorgio , which he had redesigned. The only inscription on his grave was his name.
