Marc Mommaas

Marc Mommaas (born September 12, 1969 ) is a Dutch jazz musician ( tenor saxophone ).

Mommaas comes from a family of artists; his mother is an opera singer and pianist, his father a painter. In 1997 the first recordings were made with Fay Victor . After studying and obtaining a Masters in Communication Sciences, he moved to New York City in 1997 after receiving two scholarships ( Stichting Podium Kunsten, Prins Bernard Fonds & Anjer Fondsen ). There he continued his studies at the Manhattan School of Music , earned a Masters in Jazz Performance and received the William H. Borden Award. In the following years he toured the United States and Canada with his band ; In 1999 his debut album Global Motion Trio was released , with Nikolaj Hess (piano) and John Hébert (double bass). In 2001 the drummer Tony Moreno joined the trio; In 2003 the album Global Motion was released on Sunnyside Records , which received positive reviews in Downbeat , JazzTimes , Jazzimprov and All About Jazz . In 2009 he recorded the album Landmark with Nate Radley , Vic Juris , Rez Abbasi and Tony Moreno . In the field of jazz he was involved in 14 recording sessions between 1997 and 2012, including also with Armen Donelian , Rez Abbasi and Amina Figarova .
