Marc Neikrug

Marc Neikrug (born September 24, 1946 in New York City ) is an American composer and pianist .

Life

The son of cellist and music teacher George Neikrug studied piano and music theory in Los Angeles and from 1964 to 1968 composition with Giselher Klebe at the Detmold Music Academy . In Tanglewood he took courses with Gunther Schuller and in 1972 he was composer in residence at the Marlboro Music School and Festival under the direction of Rudolf Serkin . He was also a piano student of Stefan Askenase .

From the mid-1970s Neikrug appeared as a duo partner of Pinchas Zukerman . Since 1998 he has been artistic director of the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival . His career as a composer began in 1966 with a piano concerto. He became known for his music theater piece Through Roses (1980). The commissioned work from New York's 92nd Street Y tells the story of a violinist who survived Auschwitz . It has been translated into eleven languages ​​and has seen over 500 performances in fifteen countries. It was the subject of a documentary by Christopher Nupen and was filmed in 1997 by Jürgen Flimm with Maximilian Schell as the narrator.

In 1988 the opera Los Alamos , commissioned by the Deutsche Oper Berlin, premiered at the Berlin Festival . The American premiere took place at the Aspen Music Festival and School .
