Marc Shmuger

Marc Shmuger (born June 27, 1958 ) is an American manager and film producer . From 1998 to 2009 he worked at Universal Pictures , most recently as CEO. From February 2016 to December 2017 he headed the film production company EuropaCorp .

Life

Marc Shmuger studied English and Film Studies at Wesleyan University from 1976 to 1980 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts .

He began his career in the film industry in the 1980s, including working as a creative consultant and script supervisor. Together with Mark Malone he wrote the script for the horror thriller Dead of Winter , which was filmed by Arthur Penn in 1987 . Shmuger first appeared as a film producer.

From May 1991 to May 1998 Shmuger was employed in marketing at Sony Pictures Entertainment , where he was responsible for the marketing of Luc Besson's films Léon - The Professional and The Fifth Element . Most recently, Shmuger was Executive Vice President of Marketing at Sony. He then moved to Universal Pictures , where he started as President of Marketing and was later promoted to Vice Chairman. Advertising Age named him Entertainment Marketer of the Year in 1999 and 2000 . In March 2006, he was promoted to chairman of Universal Pictures; David Linde became co-chairman. After various conflicts with employees and filmmakers, Shmuger was fired from Universal Pictures together with David Linde in October 2009. He was succeeded by Adam Fogelson .

In 2011 he founded his own production company Global Produce, with which he produced, among others, Alex Gibney's documentaries We Steal Secrets: The WikiLeaks Story and Zero Days .

In February 2016, Shmuger was appointed CEO of Luc Besson's manufacturing company EuropaCorp after previous CEO Christophe Lambert surprisingly announced his retirement. He held this position until the end of 2017, when the company was in financial distress following the flop of Besson's costly science fiction film Valerian: The City of a Thousand Planets . Shmuger continued to act as a consultant for the company and also produced Besson's next film, Anna .

Shmuger is also a partner at the consulting firm KKM Global Brand Strategies . He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, and served on the Board of Trustees of the American Film Institute .

His marriage to Louise Hamagami resulted in two sons.
