Marc Weigel (born September 16, 1978 in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse ) is a German politician ( FWG ). He has been Lord Mayor of his hometown since January 1, 2018 .

education and profession

Weigel graduated from the Leibniz-Gymnasium Neustadt in 1998 . From 1998 to 2006 he studied law and political science as well as German and philosophy in Heidelberg and Mannheim . After the First State Exam, which he took in political science and German, he completed 2007 to 2008 training as a student teacher at the State Department of Teaching and Teacher Education (schools) in Heidelberg and taught in this period on Liselotte-Gymnasium Mannheim . In 2008, after passing the second state examination, he moved to the Leibniz-Gymnasium Neustadt and worked there until 2017, most recently as senior lecturer , in the subjects of German , politics and ethics .

In 1994 Weigel joined the Free Voters' Group Neustadt an der Weinstrasse e. V., of which he has been chairman since 2014. In the local elections in 1999, when he was almost 21 years old, he won a seat for the FWG in the city ​​council of the independent city of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse and soon after took over the leadership of the parliamentary group . In September 2007 he was elected deputy chairman of the Free Voting Group Rhineland-Palatinate. From 2009 to 2014 he was Assistant Secretary and Culture Councilor of Neustadt. In the County Council Palatinate it is since 2009 member of the Committee on Arts, Culture, History and Folklore Palatinate.

In 2017 Weigel applied for the office of Lord Mayor of Neustadt for the FWG and was elected to succeed Hans Georg Löffler (CDU) with 58.1% of the votes in the first ballot with a turnout of 75% . Competitors Ingo Röthlingshöfer (CDU, Löffler's deputy mayor ) and Pascal Bender (SPD) achieved 21.8% and 20.0% of the vote, respectively. Weigel's eight-year term began on January 1, 2018.

Other engagement

From 2004 to 2014 Weigel was an honorary judge at the juvenile lay judge at the Neustadt District Court . He has been a founding member of the Friends of the Memorial for Nazi Victims in Neustadt since 2009.

Weigel gained national fame when he initiated the first Neustadt cultural festival in the summer of 2013. As head of cultural affairs, he brought about the previously missing networking of the Neustadt cultural scene. The result was 250 cultural events with 5000 participants, which attracted over 100,000 visitors over two weeks.
