The Marca marmoset ( Mico marcai , Syn .: Callithrix marcai ) is a species of primate from the marmoset family .

features

Marca marmosets, like all marmosets, are relatively small primates with silky fur and a long tail. The fur is predominantly gray in color and turns brown towards the back, and the hind legs are also brown. The head is also dark brown, the face is hairless, the bare ears protrude from the fur. As with all marmosets, the fingers and toes (with the exception of the big toe) have claws instead of nails. The body length is about 22 cm, plus a tail about 36 cm long. The weight of the animals is around 280 to 310 grams.

Distribution and way of life

So far, Marca marmosets have only been found in one place, in the area of the confluence of the Rio Aripuanã and Rio Roosevelt in the Amazon basin in the Brazilian state of Amazonas . The habitat there are terra firme - rainforests .

The species was first described on the basis of three museum specimens , so far there have been no observations of living animals. Therefore their way of life is also unknown. Like all marmosets, they are likely to be diurnal tree dwellers who live in groups and feed on tree sap, fruits and small animals.

There is also no information about the degree of endangerment, the IUCN lists the species under “too little data available” ( data deficient ).

Systematics

The Marca marmoset was first described in 1993 on the basis of three museum specimens by R. Alperin as Callithrix argentata marcai , i.e. as a subspecies of the silver monkey (today Mico argentatus ). In 2014, the Manicoré marmoset ( Mico manicorensis ), which was first described in 2000 by M. van Roosmalen , T. van Roosmalen , Mittermeier and Rylands as Callithrix manicorensis , was synonymous with Mico marcai . It does not differ morphologically from the Marca marmoset, nor is there a geographical barrier between the two forms.
