River course

The Rio Roosevelt has its source 10 km north of Vilhena in the state of Rondônia at an altitude of about 600  m . The Rio Roosevelt flows north through the Amazon basin. The middle section of the river is in the state of Mato Grosso , the lower in the state of Amazonas . The Campos Amazônicos National Park is located on the lower reaches . There are strong rapids and waterfalls on the Rio Roosevelt .

history

The river was discovered in 1909 by the Brazilian adventurer Cândido Rondon , who gave it the name Rio da Dúvida ("River of Doubt") at the time. 1913-1914 Rondon sought the river again. The aim of this second expedition, known as the Roosevelt-Rondon Expedition , was to clarify whether the Rio da Dúvida flows into the Amazon . Rondon was accompanied by former US President Theodore Roosevelt , in honor of whom he renamed the river.

Since the pronunciation of "Roosevelt" is problematic in the lusophone world, the Rio Roosevelt is sometimes referred to as the Rio Teodoro .
