Marcel Froissart

Marcel Froissart (born December 20, 1934 in Paris ; † October 21, 2015 ) was a French theoretical physicist who deals with elementary particle physics.

career

Froissart went to the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris and studied from 1953 at the École polytechnique and then at the École nationale supérieure des mines de Paris (today Mines ParisTech ). He did not stay there long, however, but was sent to Algeria in cooperation with the French Navy and in 1957 to the Commissariat à l'énergie atomique (CEA), for which he was at CERN from 1957 to 1958 . In 1958/59 he was at the University of Algiers and 1960/61 at the University of California at Berkeley , where he worked with Geoffrey Chew , and in 1961/62 and 1965/66 at Princeton University . In 1973 he became professor of particle physics at the Collège de France . In 2004 he retired.

In the 1960s he was a well-known physicist in the then current "S-matrix theory" of elementary particle physics (the main representative in the USA was Geoffrey Chew in Berkeley). An upper bound for the high-energy behavior of the two-particle scattering cross-sections of scalar particles is named after him. He showed that the square of the logarithm of the center of gravity energy provides an upper bound on the total cross section.

At the Collège de France, he combined the two laboratories of Francis Perrin and Louis Leprince-Ringuet and geared his laboratory to astroparticle physics - after his retirement it formed the core of the AstroParticule et Cosmologie (APC) research laboratory at the University of Paris VII .

He also took part in controversies on nuclear energy, supported the work of a scientific anti-nuclear group founded in 1975 (Groupement des scientifiques pour l'information sur l'énergie nucléaire, GSIEN) and participated in the discussion of an alternative reactor proposal in France Italian physicist Carlo Rubbia (→ Rubbiatron ).

In 1964 he received the Paul Langevin Prize .
