Before the 1983/84 season he moved to the capital club Cruz Azul , where he made his first division debut in a game against the Tigres de la UANL (0-2) on February 25, 1984. After four years at Cruz Azul, he moved to Puebla FC in 1987 and from there to Deportivo Toluca in 1991 , his longest professional station with a duration of six years. Then he was briefly with CF Monterrey and then with CF Pachuca under contract, before he let his active career end in the 2001/02 season with the Pumas de la UNAM .

Bernal made his debut in the dress of the Mexican national team on April 12, 1988 in a game against Canada, which was lost 1-0.
He scored his first international goal on March 8, 1992 against the Soviet Union (4: 0) and almost exactly nine months later, on December 6, 1992 against the Vincentian national soccer team (11: 0), his most successful international match, in which he scored six goals .
The highlight of his international career was his participation in the soccer world championships in 1994 and 1998 .
In 1994 he was used in all four Mexico games and with his equalizer in the last group game against Italy (1-1) played a decisive role in ensuring that Mexico did not have to return home after the first round. He was less successful in the round of 16 against Bulgaria. After the game ended 1-1 after extra time , a penalty shoot-out was necessary, in which Bernal's shot at Bulgarian goalkeeper Borislav Michajlow failed and Mexico lost 3-1.
In 1998 he played 20 minutes in the first round match against South Korea (3: 1) and played in the first half of the round of 16 against Germany (1: 2). The game played on June 29, 1998 was also his last appearance for "el Tri".
