Marcello Arlotta

Marcello Arlotta (* unknown, from Naples ; † August 16 or 17, 1918 in the Adriatic ) was an Italian aeronaut and tenente di Vascello Pilota ( lieutenant captain ) of the Marina Regia .

Arlotta served as Guardiamarina ( lieutenant at sea ) on the protected cruiser RN Etruria when it sailed in Jamestown in 1907 for the 300th anniversary of the English settlement of North America and then toured North and South America until 1911.

During the First World War he was in command of the airship base of Grottaglie , which was put into service in January 1916 , where some English impact airships of the Sea Scout class were assembled and used for anti-submarine defense . He commanded the airship D.1.-4 from January to June 1917 and the airship DE-8 from June 1917 to February 1918. Because of his achievements and his personal commitment, he was on April 28, 1918 with the Medaglia di Bronzo al Valor Militare excellent.

On June 29, 1918 he took command of the new airship A.-1 of approx. 18,000 m³, with which he attacked targets in the Bay of Kotor from Grottaglie . August he bombed Tivat , in the night of 16-17. August 1918 the airship did not return from its second mission. Days later, Arlotta's body was found near Cape Rodoni in Albania . He was posthumously awarded the Medaglia d'Argento al Valor Militare on May 15, 1919 . The Taranto-Grottaglie Airport is named after him.
