Marco Keiner (born April 13, 1963 in Überlingen ) is a German author and environmental director at the United Nations .

Life

After studying geography at the universities of Erlangen-Nuremberg and Nice, as well as completing a post-graduate degree in spatial planning at the ETH Zurich , he worked as a spatial planner in the cantonal administrations of Zurich and St. Gallen. He then went to Mali and Benin as a development worker for four years . There he wrote his doctoral thesis on sustainability-oriented land use planning in the Sahel. He received his doctorate in 1999 from the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt . From 2000 to 2007, Keiner was senior assistant at the Institute for Spatial and Landscape Development at the ETH Zurich and at times lecturer for geography and spatial planning at the University of Innsbruck , where he also completed his habilitation in 2005. In 2007 he became head of the "Urban Environment" section at UN-HABITAT in Nairobi . From 2008 to 2010 he was Director of the Environment, Housing and Land Use Department at the United Nations Economic Commission in Geneva . Marco Keiner has been Director of the Environment Department since 2011.
