Marco Zanni (born July 11, 1986 in Lovere , Bergamo province ) is an Italian politician of the Lega (until 2017 Movimento 5 Stelle ). He has been a member of the European Parliament since 2014 and Chairman of the Identity and Democracy (ID) group since 2019 .

Life

After graduating from the Liceo Decio Celeri in the small Lombard town of Lovere , Zanni studied business administration at the Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi in Milan, which he graduated in 2008. He then did a Master of Science degree in International Management at ESADE in Barcelona in 2010 . He then worked as a financial analyst at Bank Intesa Sanpaolo until 2012 and then at the investment bank Banca IMI .

As a representative of the populist five-star movement (Movimento 5 Stelle) in the constituency of north-west Italy, Zanni was elected to the European Parliament in the 2014 European elections . There he sat until January 2017, like the other representatives of the five-star movement in the EU-skeptical group Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy (EFDD). He was a member of the Budget Committee , the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs , the Special Committee on Tax Decisions and Measures of Similar Nature or Impact (2015-2016), Delegate for Relations with the Countries of Southeast Asia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations ( ASEAN ) for the EU-Serbia Stabilization and Association Parliamentary Committee and for relations with Iran. In November 2014 Zanni initiated a motion of censure against the EU Commission Juncker because of the involvement of Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in the Luxembourg Leaks scandal. However, the majority in Parliament rejected the request.

In January 2017, Zanni moved to the right-wing extremist group Europe of Nations and Freedom (ENF) in the European Parliament . a. the members of the French Front National , Lega Nord and the FPÖ belonged to. At the same time the Movimento left 5 Stelle. After a time as a non-party member of parliament, he joined the Lega Nord in May 2018. He was re-elected on their list in the 2019 European elections. Since June 2019, Zanni has been chairman of the right-wing populist EU parliamentary group Identity and Democracy , which is the fourth largest group with 76 members and includes representatives from the Lega, the French Rassemblement National and the AfD . He is also a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs in this legislative period and is a delegate for the Parliamentary Stabilization and Association Committee between the EU and Serbia.
