Physalis Solanacea (Syn. Margaranthus solanaceus Schltdl. ) Is a plant type from the genus of jujubes ( Physalis ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae). For a long time the species wasseparatedfrom the Physalis in a monotypical genus Margaranthus .

Physalis solanacea are annual, erect or prostrate herbaceous plants, the stem axes of which are usually 15 to 40 cm (or occasionally longer) long. The leaves are ovate to lanceolate and 2 to 6 cm long and 0.5 to 1.5 cm wide. The tip is pointed or tapering, the base is wedge-shaped and can have uneven halves. Usually the leaves are hairless but ciliate. The leaf stalks are 5 to 20 mm long.

The flowers are on bent-back pedicels 2 to 3 mm long. The calyx is 1.5 to 2 mm long, closely covered with hair and provided with 0.5 mm long, pointed tips. The crown is 3.5 to 4 mm long, with multicellular trichomes on the inside , the corolla lobes are very fine. The stamens do not protrude beyond the crown, the stamens are 1 mm long, the 1 to 1.2 mm long anthers are blue.

The fruit is an egg-shaped berry with a diameter of 6 to 10 mm. The fruit is surrounded by an enlarging calyx that is about 1 to 1.5 mm long. The seeds are about 2 mm long, almost circular, the surface of the seeds is reticulated and pitted.

Occurrence and locations

The species grows in moist thickets and as a weed in fields at altitudes of 800 to 1,000 m. The distribution area includes the southwest of the USA , Mexico , Honduras and the West Indies .
