The Margaree River ( Abhainn Mhargaraidh ) is a river on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada.

The northeast arm of the river has its source on the watershed of the Cape Breton Highlands , while the southwest arm of the Margaree River runs northeast from Lake Ainslie . Both arms unite to form the actual Margaree River at Margaree Forks . The river flows north and flows into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence at Margaree Harbor .

The main arm of the river has a length of 15 km. The catchment area of the Margaree River is 1375 km². Sport fishing for trout and salmon in the Margaree River has been around for 100 years. Fishing is nowadays heavily regulated and restricted to fly fishing and only in the main arm.

The gravel banks in the upper Northeast Margaree River (northeast arm) provide spawning grounds for Atlantic salmon . Its steep river valleys are home to spruce martens and the rare red- toothed shrew Sorex gaspensis . The Margaree Valley is made up of a combination of farms and forests.

Acadians settled along the coast near the estuary during the 18th century . The French name of the river was St. Marguerite . At the beginning of the 19th century, Scottish Highlanders began to settle in the Margaree Valley.

The Margaree River was given the status of a Canadian Heritage River in 1998.
