Margaret Cambridge, Marchioness of Cambridge
Margaret Cambridge, Marchioness of Cambridge (born Lady Margaret Evelyn Grosvenor , born April 9, 1873 at Eaton Hall , Cheshire , † March 27, 1929 in London ) was a British noblewoman . By marriage she was a member of the British royal family and the last Duchess of Teck in the Kingdom of Württemberg .
Life
Margaret Evelyn was the third daughter of eight children of Hugh Lupus Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster (1825–1899) and his first wife, Lady Constance Gertrude Leveson-Gower (1834–1880), eldest daughter of George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 2. Duke of Sutherland and Lady Harriet Elizabeth Georgiana Howard .
On December 12, 1894, Lady Margaret Evelyn married at Eaton Hall, Chester, the German-born Prince Adolphus von Teck (1868-1927), eldest son of Duke Franz von Teck (1837-1900) and his wife Princess Mary Adelaide of Great Britain, Ireland and Hanover (1833–1897), youngest daughter of Prince Adolphus Frederick, 1st Duke of Cambridge . The marriage, which all reports said was a happy one, had four children:
- George Francis Hugh , 2nd Marquess of Cambridge (1895–1981), ⚭ 1923 Lady Dorothy Westenra Hastings;
- Lady Victoria Constance Mary (1897–1987), ⚭ 1923 Henry Hugh Arthur Somerset, 10th Duke of Beaufort ;
- Lady Helena Frances Augusta (1899–1969), ⚭ 1919 Colonel John Evelyn Gibbs;
- Lord Frederick Charles Edward (killed in Belgium 1907–1940 ).
During their marriage, Lady Margaret was involved in several charitable organizations; a major concern was school education and sickness. In addition to her social responsibilities, Lady Margaret belonged to the circle of friends of the Prince of Wales and later King George V and his wife Princess Maria von Teck , sister of her husband.
In 1917, due to anti-German sentiments prevailing in Britain during World War I , the name of the British royal family was changed to Windsor . The king renounced all German titles himself and on behalf of all other members of the royal family who were British citizens . Accordingly, Margaret's husband, Adolphus, just like his brother renounced his German title on July 14, 1917 and took the family name Cambridge ( derived from his grandfather Adolphus Frederick, 1st Duke of Cambridge ). The king bestowed the titles of Marquess of Cambridge , Earl of Eltham and Viscount Northallerton , all in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
Lady Margaret outlived her husband, who died in 1927, by two years. She is buried by his side at the Royal Burial Ground Frogmore .
