Margaret Castro

Margaret Castro (born August 22, 1959 ) is a former judoka from the United States. She was World Cup second in 1982 and World Cup third in 1984 and 1987.

Athletic career

Margaret Castro fought in the heavyweight division or in the open class. She won eleven American championship titles: from 1977 to 1980 and from 1982 to 1985 she won four heavyweight titles in a row, in addition to the open class in 1985 and titles in the heavyweight and open class in 1988.

At the end of November 1980, the first World Championships for women took place in New York City . Castro lost in the heavyweight semi-finals to the French Paulette Fouillet and lost in the battle for a bronze medal against the German Christiane Kieburg . Two years later, Castro won the semifinals against Marjolein van Unen from the Netherlands at the 1982 World Championships in Paris and lost to Nathalie Lupino from France in the final .

In 1983, women's judo competitions were held for the first time at the Pan American Games in Caracas . Castro won the final in the open class against the Cuban Regla Povea . In the first edition of the Fukuoka Cup in December 1983 Castro won the heavyweight final against Nathalie Lupino, in the final of the open class she was defeated by Belgian Ingrid Berghmans . At the 1984 World Championships in Vienna, Castro lost to the Italian Maria Teresa Motta in the heavyweight semi-finals , and she won the battle for a bronze medal against Nilmari Santini from Puerto Rico. At the Fukuoka Cup 1984 Castro took third place in the heavyweight division, in the open class she reached the final and then lost to Ingrid Berghmans. In 1985 Castro won the Pan American Heavyweight Championships in Havana, and at the end of the year she finished third in the open class at the Fukuoka Cup.

After a year break, Margaret Castro was back on the mat at the 1987 Pan American Games in Indianapolis. In the heavyweight final she was defeated by Nilmari Santini. As in 1983, however, she won the open class, this time defeating the Cuban Estela Rodríguez in the final . At the 1987 World Championships in Essen, she was defeated by the Chinese Gao Fenglian in the round of 16 of the heavyweight division . With victories in the hope round over the Polish Beata Maksymow and the Italian Maria Teresia Motta, she won a bronze medal. In the open class she was eliminated in the quarter-finals against the Dutch Irene de Kok . In 1988 Castro won the Pan American Championships in Buenos Aires in both heavyweight and open classes.

At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, judo competitions for women were offered as part of the demonstration competitions. Castro won her opening match against Maria Teresia Motta by Ippon after 3:20 minutes. In the semifinals she was defeated by the Dutch Angelique Seriese with a coca rating. Castro won the battle for bronze against South Korean Moon Yi-joon with Waza-ari.
