Margareta Brahe (born June 20, 1603 at Rydboholm Castle , Österåker municipality ; † May 15, 1669 in Weferlingen , Saxony-Anhalt ) was a Swedish countess and heiress and, through her last marriage, Landgravine of Hesse-Homburg .

Life

Margareta was a daughter of Count Abraham Brahe, a son of Per Brahe the Elder , from his marriage to Elsa Gyllenstierna af Lundholm. She was a sister of Reichsdrosten Per Brahe the Younger . Margareta married Count Bengt Bengtsson Oxenstierna († 1643) in her first marriage in 1633 and her second marriage in 1648 to Count Johan Axelsson Oxenstierna († 1657), the eldest son of Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna . She was the maid of honor of the queens Maria Eleonora and Christina of Sweden. As a member of one of the most prominent Swedish families, she had great political influence at the Swedish court. With the death of two husbands who died before her, she became a very wealthy widow.

On May 12, 1661, the wealthy heiress married Prince Friedrich von Homburg, 30 years his junior in Stockholm . Count Ludwig Heinrich von Nassau-Dillenburg had also tried to get her hand, which led to disputes. With the funds acquired through marriage, Friedrich II acquired the Weferlingen estate and, after the death of his wife, several lands in what is now the federal states of Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg , including the office and city of Neustadt (Dosse) .

With the estate of her second husband, Margareta acquired an important library from the holdings of the Sture family and the Dukes of Pomerania-Stettin , with which Margarete's brother laid the foundation of the library in Visingsö . Today the books are held by the University of Växjö .

Margareta owned a large collection of mostly life-size portraits of important Swedish personalities and their ancestors, some of which are now in Bad Homburg Castle and some in Stockholm City Hall .

Margareta is buried next to her husband in the crypt of the castle church of Bad Homburg Castle.
