The Margarethenkirche , sometimes also Margaretenkirche , is a ruin of a village church from the 14th century in the deserted area of Klein-Kerstenhausen in the district of Kerstenhausen , a district of Borken in the Schwalm-Eder district in northern Hesse , which has only survived in a few overgrown remains of rubble .

geography

About 1 km southeast of Kerstenhausen, 50 m south of the county road 73 from Kerstenhausen to Arnsbach , is 206  m above sea level on the northwest edge of a field NHN an approximately 40 × 20 m large, almost rectangular field wood island on a low rubble hill . These are the remains of the former church and, with the exception of a wall remnant of a former mill site on the Schwalm , also the village of Klein-Kerstenhausen, which was last mentioned in 1578 as a single farm. This was on the right, southern bank of the river in the Schwalmbogen between the church and the current sports field of Kerstenhausen, which is about 200 m northwest, in the Schwalmpforte north below the Kuhberg ( 342.9  m ). The field name "church stump" is still in use locally.

history

The church is mentioned for the first time in 1344 and appears again in 1464 as "ecclesia in minore Kerstenhusen". It was consecrated to Margaret of Antioch , the patron saint a . a. of peasants, virgins , wet nurses and women in labor The patronage of the church was owned by the von Löwenstein family and the community probably had its own pastor until the 16th century. The small village, however, was evidently largely abandoned by the middle of the 16th century: in 1578 there is only talk of a single farm, and the church was now looked after by an outside pastor. The residents moved to Kerstenhausen, already mentioned as "Christinehysen" in 1044, upstream on the left bank, which was probably less prone to flooding and not as windy as the location directly in the narrow Schwalmpforte.

The Margarethenkirche, now on the other side of the river, no longer so easy to reach in all seasons and in all weather conditions, gradually fell into disrepair and was called "the old church" as early as 1705/1710. In Kerstenhausen itself, the church there began to be expanded in 1742 by building a larger nave with galleries and the west tower to make room for the increased number of residents.

A photo from 1929 shows a narrow section of the wall towering several meters high, but which has not been secured and has long since collapsed and overgrown.
