Margarito "Gary" B. Teves (born August 1, 1943 ) is a Filipino politician .

biography

After attending school, he first studied at the Complutense University of Madrid and graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He then completed postgraduate studies at the University of London College , from which he graduated in 1965 with a degree in economics. He then completed another postgraduate course at Williams College in Massachusetts , USA , where he obtained a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in development economics in 1968 .

Margarito Teves was President of the Philippine Economic Society, a member of the Makati Business Club, founder of the Corporate Planning Society of the Philippines, and Trustee of the Philippine Futuristics Society.

Teves began his political career in July 1987 with the election to the House of Representatives (Kapulungán ng mgá Kinatawán ng Pilipinas or Mababang Kapulungan ng Kongreso). In this he represented the interests of constituency III (3rd District) of the province of Negros Oriental until June 1998 . His successor as MP was his father Herminio Teves, who was a member of the House of Representatives between 1970 and 1972.

During his membership in the House of Representatives, he chaired the Rural Development and Economic Affairs Committees and several other standing and special committees.

As a member of parliament, he was the initiator of several important laws in the field of finance and economy . These included the liberalization of the entry and expansion of business activities of foreign banks in the Philippines (Republic Act 7221), the so-called Magna Charter for Small Businesses (Republic Act 6911) and the amendment to patents , trademark rights and copyright law (Republic Act 8293). In addition, he submitted a draft for an amendment to the National Internal Revenue Code and for the establishment of the so-called Overseas Investment Fund, which was intended to provide incentives for the provision of foreign workers and to reduce foreign debt .

He was also one of the initiators of the new Central Bank Law (Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas) (Republic Act 7653), the Law Establishing the Cooperative Development Authority (Republic Act 6939) and the Law Restructuring the Excise Duty on Petroleum Products (Republic Act 8184).

Between July 1998 and August 2000 he was chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of the business development agency Think Tank, Inc.

On September 1, 2000, he became President and CEO of Land Bank of the Philippines , the fourth largest bank in the Philippines and the largest state-owned bank. He was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the People's Credit and Finance Corporation and the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation. He was also a member of the council of the National Food Authority, Food Terminal Inc. and a board member of Manila Electric Company (Meralco) and PhilEquity Incorporated.

Margarito Teves was on July 12, 2005 by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as Finance Minister (Secretary of Finance) in her Cabinet called and heard this on since then.

In 2009 he was from that in London appearing business magazine selected "The Banker" as the "Best Finance Minister of Asia".
