The Church of the Nativity of Mary ( Serbian : Храм Рођења Пресвете Богородице, Hram Rođenja Presvete Bogorodice), also called Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God , in Ljubinje is a Serbian Orthodox church in southeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina .

The church was built from 1866 to 1867 and is dedicated to the birth of the Most Holy Mother of God, Mary . The branch church belongs to the parish Ljubinje in the deanery Trebinje - Dubrovnik of the eparchy Zahumlje - Herzegovina and the foreshore of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

The church stands in the center of the city of Ljubinje. The church stands near the bank of the Bukov Potok river . At the intersection of Svetosavska ulica and Ulica Nikole Tesle .

The church stands in the center of the Serbian Orthodox cemetery in Ljubinje. The Sveti Sava elementary school , named after St. Sava of Serbia, and the Svetozar Ćorović middle school are located near the church . The Church of the Nativity of Christ is also located in Ljubinje, which was built between 2000 and 2004 and is the town's parish church.

History and architecture

The Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary was built between 1866 and 1867 and consecrated in 1867. The church was built from stone. The church does not have a steeple , but has a small bell tower with three bells above the south wall. One of the bells was damaged during World War II in 1941 , along with the whole church. The church roof is covered with tiles. The church has been renovated several times, most recently in 1998. The walls of the church are four meters high.

The interior of the church is in poor condition, the walls have almost collapsed, the church ceiling is visibly cracked. Preparations for the renovation of the church are currently being made. A school building was built next to the church in 1878. In 1959 the building was nationalized by the state and returned to the church in 1992. The school was renovated in 1998. In 2005, the Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary, along with the necropolis and old tombstones, was declared a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina by Ljubinje.

Iconostasis

The wooden iconostasis has a large number of icons , especially the icon for the crucifixion of Christ is worth seeing. The gospel with silver fittings on which Jesus and Mary are depicted is of particular value . These fittings alone weigh 11 kg. This was given to the trader Zoran Radonjić from Russia from Ljubinje in 1901.
