The parish church of the Coronation of Mary in Stuppach

The Roman Catholic parish church of the Coronation of Mary in Stuppach , a district of Bad Mergentheim in the Main-Tauber district , was built in 1607 and is dedicated to the Coronation of Mary .

history

In 1607 the governor of the Teutonic Order, Baron Marquard von Eck zu Mergentheim , had the parish church of the Coronation built at his own expense. The church was inaugurated on November 21, 1607 and was at the same time intended for Catholics in Dörtel , Hachtel , Lillstadt , Lustbronn and Wachbach . In addition, the builder of the church donated 2000 guilders for the employment of a sacristan and teacher. The reason for the church foundation was to put a stop to the spreading Reformation .

Right next to the church is the so-called Madonna Chapel with the Stuppach Madonna . It is an important picture of the Virgin Mary by Matthias Grünewald from around 1515 , which has been in the Madonna Chapel since 1812. Johann Nepomuk Meintel designed the high altar from 1852.

The church belongs to the pastoral care unit 1b - Holy Cross , which is assigned to the Mergentheim deanery of the Rottenburg-Stuttgart diocese . The building is a cultural monument of the city of Bad Mergentheim.
