Maria Abajan

Maria Abajan-Schaber (* 1950 in Yerevan ) is an Armenian opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Maria Abajan began her singing studies at the Music Conservatory in Yerevan . In 1977 she emigrated to the United States with her family . In Los Angeles she continued her studies at the USC Thornton School of Music . She was successful in several singing competitions. She won the Metropolitan Opera Competition in San Francisco, the Mario del Monaco Concours in Italy and the St. Louis Potosi Concours in Mexico. She then went to Europe and celebrated stage successes there. In 1982 she went to Germany and had an engagement at the Nationaltheater Mannheim until 1986 . In 1985 and 1987 she appeared at the Opéra de Wallonie in Liège as Abigaille in Nabucco , in 1988 in the Palais des Sports in Liège in the title role of Turandot , in 1990 as Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana and again as Abigaille in 1991. In 1987 she sang in Brussels Abigaille in Strasbourg Santuzza in Zurich and Santiago, the title role in Aida , in Hamburg Elisabetha in Don Carlos and Leonora in Trovatore Il .

In 1990 she sang Floria Tosca in Tosca at the Opera Scotland and Leonora in Il trovatore at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden . In the 1991/92 season she sang the role of Leonora de Vargas in La forza del destino and twice Floria Tosca in Tosca at the Vienna State Opera . In 1993 she sang the Abigaille in Nabucco at the Bregenz Festival . In addition to engagements at the major European opera houses, she was engaged in South America in Santiago de Chile , Rio de Janeiro , São Paulo and Caracas as well as in Tel Aviv. On September 1, 2017, she organized a benefit concert in the Gerresheim district of Düsseldorf .
