Maria Blasco (* 1965 in Alicante , Spain ) is a Spanish molecular biologist . Blasco has distinguished herself as a scientist through pioneering work in the field of telomeres (the end pieces of chromosomes ) and telomerases ( enzymes that become active when cells divide ). Their findings promise new avenues in cancer therapy ; they could also help to extend the life of cells - and thus possibly also that of humans.

biography

Blasco studied biochemistry and molecular biology at the Autonomous University of Madrid and received his PhD in 1993. She then worked as a postdoc at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory ( New York ) until 1996 and returned to Spain in 1997. At the National Cancer Research Center (CNIO) in Madrid, Blasco has headed the Molecular Oncology Research Group since 2003 . She has been Vice Director since 2005.

Awards

Blasco has received numerous prizes and awards for her research work. In 2003 she was awarded the Dr. Josef Steiner Cancer Research Prize awarded. In 2008 she received the € 750,000 Körber European Science Award in Hamburg .
