Dr. Josef Steiner Cancer Research Prize

The Dr. Josef Steiner Cancer Research Award is a Swiss science award in the field of cancer research that has been awarded by the Dr. Josef Steiner Cancer Foundation based in Bern .

According to the foundation's statutes, the aim of the award is to "honor outstanding cancer research that is carried out in the biological , basic medical , clinical-diagnostic or therapeutic areas". The prize includes personal prize money of 50,000 Swiss francs . In addition, a cancer research project by the respective award winner will be funded with up to 1,000,000 Swiss francs over a period of four years (as of 2016). Most recently, the prize was awarded roughly every two years.

Josef Maria Steiner (born September 9, 1889 in Alpthal near Einsiedeln , † September 22, 1983 in Biel ) was a Swiss pharmacist . From 1907 to 1911 he attended the cantonal teacher training college in Schwyz and obtained a primary school teacher certificate . Steiner was a soldier and was certified as a lieutenant in the infantry in 1913 . During the First World War he served in various units in the Jura and Ticino . In 1919 he made up his Matura and began studying pharmacy at the University of Geneva . 1923 acquired Steiner, the federal diploma as a pharmacist and a doctorate in the same year with the work "Etude sur les levures actives des vins valaisans" to Dr. phil. nat. In 1931 Steiner opened the Dr. Steiner pharmacy and train station drugstore , which he ran for 52 years - until he was 94. Steiner lived modestly. In his will he stipulated that a prize for cancer research should be donated from his bequest.
