Maria Josepha Hermengilde Esterházy de Galantha (born April 13, 1768 as Maria Josepha Hermengilde von und zu Liechtenstein ; † August 8, 1845 ) was the daughter of Franz Josef I , Prince of Liechtenstein . On September 15, 1783 she married Prince Nicholas II Esterházy de Galantha , who in 1794 became Prince of Esterházy .

Life

Like her husband, she was a patron of the arts, especially Joseph Haydn . Haydn was commissioned to compose a mass every year between 1796 and 1802 , which was to be performed to celebrate their name day (September 8th, the birth of Mary ). This is how the Holy Mass (1796), Timpani Mass ( 1796/97), Nelson Mass ( 1798), Theresienmesse (1799), Creation Mass ( 1801) and the Harmony Mass (1802) came about .

In 1807 Ludwig van Beethoven composed the Mass in C major , op.86, on her name day .

In 1785 she gave birth to a son, Paul Anton, and in 1788 a daughter, Leopoldine.
