Creation Mass

The Creation Mass in B flat major by Joseph Haydn ( Hob. XXII: 13 ) is the fifth of his six later masses.

Haydn composed it from July to September 1801 and it was premiered on September 13, 1801 in the Bergkirche Eisenstadt . It got its name because Haydn quotes a theme from his creation in the Gloria in the text “Qui tollis peccata mundi” , namely the passage “The thawing morning, oh how does it encourage”. Maria Theresa , wife of Emperor Franz II , is said to have displeased this passage, because the text “You bear the sins of the world” sounds so easy and light, whereupon the Empress requested the passage to be changed, but Haydn did not respond.

A performance of the fair takes about 45 minutes.

Instrumentation: solo quartet (SATB), choir (SATB), 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani, organ, strings

The fair is divided into six parts:

  • Kyrie : Adagio - Allegro moderato
  • Gloria : Allegro - Adagio - Molto vivace - Presto
  • Credo : Vivace - Adagio - Allegro - Piú Allegro
  • Sanctus : Adagio - Allegro
  • Benedictus : Allegretto
  • Agnus Dei : Adagio - Allegro moderato
