Great organ solo mass

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Missa in honorem Beatissimae Virginis Mariae in E flat major ( Hob. XXII: 4), called Great Organ Solo Mass , is a mass composition by Joseph Haydn . It was probably made in 1770, because the watermarks on the autograph correspond to those of his opera Le pescatrici from 1769 and the line-up also provides for two English horns , which the Esterhazys only acquired in 1770. The large-scale, virtuoso organ part that Haydn himself performed during the performance is remarkable . The use of the English horn was also a specialty, because these instruments could also play the low Eb. So is the mass in E flat major.

Instrumentation: solo quartet, choir, English horns, horns, strings, organ (trumpets and timpani added later)

The parts are:

  • Kyrie : Allegro moderato
  • Gloria : Moderato - Andante - Allegro
  • Credo : Vivace - Largo - Allegro - Presto
  • Sanctus : Andante moderato - Allegro
  • Benedictus: Moderato assai - Allegro
  • Agnus Dei : Adagio - Presto
