Nikolaimesse
The Missa Sancti Nicolai Hob. XXII: 6 (German Nikolaimesse ) in G major is the sixth mass by Joseph Haydn . Because of the pastoral melody of Kyrie and Dona nobis pacem , which is in six-four time, the mass is also called the six-quarter mass . Overall, the mass has a pastoral character as it was composed for the Advent season.
The work was probably premiered on December 6, 1772 to celebrate Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy 's name day and was probably created as a thank you. In the same year the prince was induced by Haydn's farewell symphony to break off his summer stay at Esterházy Palace early. Haydn wrote the mass in a great hurry and used various short forms. The Dona nobis pacem has the same music as the Kyrie .
