Missa Cellensis in honorem Beatissimae Virginis Mariae

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Missa Cellensis in honorem Beatissimae Virginis Mariae ('Mariazeller Mass in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary'; also Great Mariazeller Mass ) in C major ( Hob. XXII: 5) is a mass composition by Joseph Haydn . It is also known under the title Missa Sanctae Caeciliae or German "Cäcilienmesse" , which is neither authentic nor accurate . This epithet can be found on individual copies of the mass as early as 1800, but does not go back to Haydn (moreover, the mass is not related to Saint Cecilia in any way that justifies the name ). A 1970 aufgefundenes in Romania fragment of the autograph score Haydn calls the full title of the work as well as the 1782 resulting Missa Cellensis (Mariazellermesse) (Hob. 8) the Marian shrine of Mariazell in Styria associates, hence the name Missa Cellensis the both works.

history

According to current music-historical knowledge, Haydn began composing the mass in 1766, in that year Haydn became the first conductor of Prince Esterházy and was thus also responsible for church music. The composition was probably not completed until 1773. This mass is the largest mass composition that he has ever written. The Gloria in particular has an enormous length, it has 821 bars and is divided into 7 parts. This form corresponds to the cantata mass . Haydn probably wanted to put all of his compositional skills to the test with this mass, because the mass is rich in fugues, fugal passages and almost operatic solos. A performance of the fair takes about 65 minutes. This would go beyond the liturgical framework, for this reason the first edition of the score in 1807 was published by Breitkopf & Härtel in an abbreviated form. There is no documentary evidence of whether the nickname “Cecilia Mass” is related to a performance by the Vienna Tonkünstler Brotherhood of the Congregation of St. Cecilia (in which the commissioner of the mass was suspected at times) on the occasion of the feast of St. Cecilia on November 22nd.
