Missa Cellensis

The Missa Cellensis in C major ( Hob. XXII: 8, autograph Missa Cellensis Fatta per il Signor Liebe de Kreutzner ) is the eighth mass composition by Joseph Haydn . It is usually called the Mariazeller Mass , sometimes also called the Small Mariazeller Mass. It was written in 1782 and is Haydn's last mass setting before his last six major masses. As the nickname suggests, Haydn dedicated the mass - as did the Missa Cellensis in honorem Beatissimae Virginis Mariae from 1766–1773 - to the pilgrimage site of Mariazell . The mass was commissioned by the officer Anton Liebe von Kreutzner on the occasion of his elevation to the nobility.

Compared to Haydn's late masses, their structure is still very traditional: fugues at the end of Gloria, Credo and Agnus Dei, solo passages in Gloria and Credo and a solo Benedictus. However, Haydn also built in completely new things, such as a slow symphonic introduction at the beginning of the Kyrie, in which the movement grows from the deep voices of the choir and orchestra. The fugues are very rhythmic and strongly syncopated, the solo passages appear very theatrical. This mass is thus a link between the early and late masses by Joseph Haydn.
