Maria Krüger (born September 6, 1904 in Warsaw ; † August 13, 1999 there ) was a Polish journalist, editor and children's book author.

Life

Her father Edmund Krüger (1881-1935) was a publicist and author of books for children and young people. After studying at the University of Warsaw , she continued her education at the Academy of Political Sciences (Akademia Nauk Politycznych) until 1929. From 1928 she worked as an editor for the youth magazine Płomyczek . She then published in children's and youth magazines such as Świerszczyk , Dziatwa , Słonko and Poranek . She took part in the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. In 1956 she initiated the TV program Miś z okienka and wrote film scripts for it for a while. She has written feature sections and short stories for the evening newspaper Wieczór Warszawy .

The children's books Karolcia and Witaj Karolciu! were translated into several languages ​​and later filmed as a TV series. Teofila Reich-Ranicki , who had lived in Germany since 1958, translated two children's books into German. Maria Krüger wrote the screenplay based on the story Nutcracker and Mouse King by ETA Hoffmann , which was filmed in 1967 as Dziadek do orzechów .

From 1958 to 1987 she was a member of the Association of Polish Writers (Związek Literatów Polskich) and from 1967 in the Polish PEN Club. For her literary commitment and her cultural work, she received the Polish Prime Minister's Prize in 1978 as well as the Medal for Victory and Freedom 1945 and the Grunwald Badge for her participation in the Warsaw Uprising.
