Maria Publig (born April 29, 1962 in Vienna ) is an Austrian journalist and author .

Life

Maria Publig graduated from an upper secondary school with a focus on music. During this time she led the school's choir and orchestra and received composition lessons. She then studied theater, film and media studies , musicology, ethnology and philosophy at the University of Vienna . She wrote her dissertation on the subject of Mozart operas. At the same time she completed a sound engineering degree at the Vienna University of Music. These prerequisites, her beginning journalistic work for the Viennese city magazine “Falter” and the daily newspaper “ Der Standard ” as well as her first book publication Mozart - An Unwavering Life made the ORF aware of her, during which she then 15 years until 2007, partly in leading Function, was editorially active.

In between, another book was published: Richard Strauss - Citizen - Artist - Rebel. A historical approximation. Nazi documents that became accessible at the time were first incorporated into a popular science biography and presented to the public during the Salzburg Festival in 1999.

Maria Publig also worked as a dramaturg and program editor at the Wiener Konzerthaus and wrote several CD booklets, including the premiere of Alfred Schnittke's String Quartet No. 4.

As a graduate of the former teacher training institute, which was reformed into a school training center, she was also interested in educational issues. Based on this approach, she initiated a number of projects for the Republic of Austria in 1996 as the national coordinator of the European year of education "Lifelong Learning".

Her books have been translated into several languages.

She is also an author of suspense literature. In her detective novel "Waldviertelmorde" she deals with the topics of deceleration, burnout, consumerism, sustainability and social issues. The cultural clash between urban and rural areas creates bizarre moments. In "Killerkarpfen", the second part of the Walli winegrowers series, is again The Waldviertel crime scene and scene of social tensions. Two weeks after its publication, the detective novel was number 6 on MORAWA Austria's bestseller list in March 2019. The current "Waldviertel curse" is set in the Kamptal with its idyllic vineyards. The detective against her will, Walli Winzer, gets into the moral shallows of some notorious Austrian cellars between sobriety and the inheritance of a couple of brothers. On March 20, 2020, INSIDER magazine ranked “Waldviertel curse” as No. 2 between Andrea Camilleri and Arne Dahl among top crime novels.

Quotes

"WALDVIERTEFLUCH ... Eins-a-Millieu study!" Michaela Knapp , magazine "trend." No. 11-2020, March

“A biography that does not discuss Mozart's interpretation of the 19th century, but teaches us to understand the original from the 18th century. Maria Publig awakens the desire to read and curiosity, brings sleepless nights that make you really lively. ” Marianne Reissinger ,“ Münchner Abendzeitung ”6./7. July 1991

“Publig's work distinguishes above all the detached seriousness with which she presents and supports her theses. Nonetheless, her Mozart book is also recommended as a pleasant, never high-priced read. The young Viennese managed to strike a good balance between academic and literary demands. Chances of a permanent place on the shelves can be given to the book. " Wilhelm Sinkovicz ," Die Presse "16./17. November 1991

“Maria Publig sees a special fate in Mozart. From this point of view there are revealing insights into the particularly devious "fighting style" of the Viennese intriguers, which has been preserved to this day due to mentality. Corrupt forces are still working underground to prevent unpleasant monuments. Let opera directors such as Mahler, Karajan, Maazel or Drese fall mercilessly and help people with dubious qualifications to top public positions. The twelve-year-old Mozart was already exposed to such cabals. The impartiality with which the author creates such connections is refreshing, especially since she spices it up with a verbal bite that is reminiscent of Thomas Bernhard. ” “ Das Opernglas ” , Hamburg December 1991

"The Richard Strauss biography of Maria Publig is one of the most important and best books I have read in recent years." Barbara Rett , culture expert and ORF presenter, summer 1999, Treffpunkt Kultur, Von Tag zu Tag, Kultursender ORF III

“With previously inaccessible original documents from the Nazi era, with letters and interviews, she re-poses the question of the role and function of the great composer during the Second World War. A complex biography that illuminates the life and work of the master in the context of the historical events of his time. Worth reading, tough and fair at the same time. " Alfred Worm , cultural director and editor-in-chief of the" News "magazine, August 19, 1999
