Maria-Schutz-Kirche in Freiburg

Maria Schutz is a small church (sometimes called a chapel) in the east of the Wiehre district of the city of Freiburg im Breisgau . It is used by various Christian Orthodox faith communities.

history

The listed building was built from 1885 to 1889 as a subsidiary church of St. Johann, mainly for the Catholic Christians of the neighboring workers' settlement "Knopfhäusle" and was originally called Maria-Hilf-Kirche. It was consecrated on October 27, 1889 by the then Freiburg Archbishop Christian Roos . Between 1921 and 1923 the interior was renovated and decorated with frescoes by the painter Hermann Anton Bantle from Munich. Because the church had become too small due to the increasing population in the east of the Wiehre, i.e. the Oberwiehre, a new, much larger Maria-Hilf-Kirche was built nearby from 1927 to 1929 . That is why the “old” Maria-Hilf-Kirche was rarely used.

In 1980 the church was handed over from the Catholic Church to the Orthodox Churches and is available for their services. Since then she has also been called Maria Schutz ( Romanian Acoperǎmântul Maicii Domnului ). It had previously been renovated at the expense of the Catholic and Protestant Churches and prepared for the liturgical needs of Orthodoxy. The first user was the Romanian Orthodox community in 1980, followed by the Serbian and Greek communities in 1981 . In 2003 the Russian Orthodox community was added.
