Pilgrimage sites of the Comforter of the Afflicted
Well-known pilgrimage sites and churches are Our Lady of Luxembourg (since 1624) and - in the time of the Thirty Years War , the Counter Reformation and the recatholization of Luxembourg - Kevelaer on the Lower Rhine (since 1642) and Werl in Westphalia (since 1661), Maria Plain near Salzburg (beginning of the 17th century), the Basilica Mariatrost in Mariatrost near Graz and the Santuario di Maria Consolatrice (La Consolata) in Milan (unclear beginnings, built 1678).
- The miraculous image of Luxembourg, today in the cathedral of Luxembourg , is said to have been set up for worship by the Jesuit father Jacques Brocquart († 1660) on December 8, 1624, on the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, in the open field in front of the fortifications. It is “a picture of Mary carved out of linden wood, majestically depicted as an apocalyptic woman on the crescent moon.” With this, Luxembourg became the center of the pilgrimage event Our Lady of the Octave
- The small miraculous image in Kevelaer , an engraving, shows the statue of the Consolatrix, which is venerated in Luxembourg as part of the Octave of Our Lady.
- A miraculous image is venerated in Werl , the origin of which may be the island of Gotland , from where the Ringpost Chair Madonna (approx. 1170) came to Werl via Fröndenberg and (surely) Soest . The miraculous image and the chair are carved in one piece from red alder wood, while the baby Jesus sitting on the lap is carved from oak wood. The Madonna wears a crown that is exchanged during the church year - for example, a particularly valuable crown is provided for high celebrations.
- The miraculous image of Maria Plain by an unknown hand goes back to the beginning of the 17th century and probably comes from Regen in Lower Bavaria. The jewelery comes from the heyday of the Salzburg Baroque.
- In Graz-Mariatrost there is a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary, which originally came from the Rein Abbey near Graz and was given to the Graz Pauliners from private ownership.
- From May to October, the miraculous image Consolatrix Afflictorum , painted in 1880 by Adam Siepen with his foot, is exhibited and venerated in the little house of Our Lady in the southeast of the city of Düren , North Rhine-Westphalia . In the remaining months of the year the picture is kept in the Düren church of St. Josef .
