María de Luna (* 1358 in Pedrola , † 1406 in Vila-real ) was Queen of the Crown of Aragon and wife of Martin I.

Life

María belonged to the noble Aragonese house Luna . Her parents were Lope de Luna, Count of Luna, and Brianda d'Agout. She was betrothed to future King Martin when she was eight years old. Then she went to the court of Queen Eleanor to be trained by her.

She married on June 13, 1372 in Barcelona Cathedral . The couple had four sons: Martin , Jakob, Johann and Margarita. Of these, only the first survived childhood. Martin, King of Sicily, died at the age of 33.

In 1396 she and her husband became kings of the crown of Aragon after John I died. She was already Countess of Luna, Duchess of Montblanc, liegeess of Bolea, Berbegal, Loarre, Vall d'Uxó, Segorbe and other places. Her husband Martin was then in Sicily, and therefore she was the governor of the Crown of Aragon. In particular, she had to act against the claims of the Count von Foix and the former Queen Violante von Bar . In 1397 Martin finally came back. The couple's coronation took place in Zaragoza Cathedral in 1399 . It was celebrated in the Palace of Aljafería .

She wrote very often to Pope Benedict XIII. to abolish the bad behavior of the nobles against the peasants of Catalonia (formerly Usos) .

She loved music and literature. Francesc Eiximenis dedicated a work to her: Scala Dei , a small treatise on morality and theology that was written in Catalan perhaps 1399 on the occasion of her coronation on April 23rd.

However, her health was very weak and she died of a stroke in 1406 in Vila-real while on the way to her lands in Segorbe .

Her will was written in 1404. In it she donated the monastery of Sancti Spiritu near Sagunto to the Franciscans . She also stipulated that this monastery should receive money annually.
